The move from renter to home owner is one that comes with lot of excitement and new responsibilities. No longer will a landlord help you with maintenance and lawn care, but now the experts at Home Depot and Hammacher Schlemmer are here to help. There are many new items that you simply must have in order to keep your new home maintained and looking good. Here is a list of the top ten items you really should have on move in day.

Lawnmower- Perhaps the largest change you'll make in moving from apartment to a home is the new necessity to mow your own lawn. You'll want to consider push and riding mowers as well as gas powered and newer electric models. The size of your lawn should be taken into consideration. Weed Eater- Apart from simply mowing the bulk of the grass, you'll also be needing something to do the edging and fine tuning of lawn and gardening maintenance. An electric powered weed eater is light weight and can recharge itself when not in use. Vacuum- This is one of many items you'll likely already own, but if you don't you'll certainly need to invest in a vacuum cleaner. Most models on the market now can handle hard surface as well as carpeting. You'll want to consider the size of your cleaning closet before purchasing a large cleaner. Mop- Considering a new age mop like the Swiffer can save you space and time. A wet jet mop allows you to sweep and mop at the same time and can make cleaning much quicker. New Locks- Although you will get keys to your home at the closing table, there is no way to guarantee who may have duplicates from the previous owners. Having new locks on hand makes for a quick transition and gives you a secure feeling. A digital keypad is also worth considering since you'll never lock yourself out. Basic Tool Set- Things like a hammer, a Phillips and Flathead screwdriver, pliers and a wrench or two should be at hand. These basic household tools will be needed for many of the initial projects you'll be doing as you move in and get comfortable. Drill- For the same reasons as needing a basic household tool set, having a drill on hand will make the basic necessities of home ownership easier. Household Cleaners- Things such as bleach, window and surface cleaner, carpet powder and vinegar are good items to have on hand. It is smart to do a deep cleaning before you start unpacking as you'll have access to more surfaces now than you ever will. Paint Supplies-Many people decide to paint their home as they move in. It's a good idea to have basic colors, rollers, brushes and trays on hand to save time out shopping. Light Bulbs- Avoid being left in the dark. Having extra light bulbs on hand on move in day ensures that you'll be able to put the light bulbs in and have light for late night unpacking.
